The Marble Mountains sit directly on the road from Da Nang to Hoi An, so almost everyone drives past them. The problem is that most visitors stop for forty minutes, climb a few dozen steps, photograph a pagoda and leave — missing the thing the place is actually known for: the cave system inside the rock.
This guide answers the three questions everyone asks first: is the climb hard, how long does it take, and in what order should you see things.
Where they are
The site is in Hoa Hai ward, about 8 km south of central Da Nang and directly on the Hoi An road.

That position is why the Marble Mountains are almost always paired with Hoi An in a single day — no detour required.
The five hills
The Vietnamese name refers to the five elements. These are five separate limestone outcrops, not one ridge.

Worth knowing: when people say they are "going to the Marble Mountains", they mean Thuy Son. It is the only hill with a complete visitor route and a lift. The others are for people with time to spare.
Is it worth going?
Yes, because
- The caves are genuinely impressive. Huyen Khong, with daylight falling through openings in its roof, is one of the most striking sights in Da Nang.
- The pagodas are old. Tam Thai and the Linh Ung here go back centuries, unlike the modern temple on Son Tra.
- The views. From the two viewing terraces you see Non Nuoc beach on one side and the plain on the other.
- Cheap and close. A 40,000₫ ticket, fifteen minutes from the centre.
- It is on the way to Hoi An, so it costs no extra travel time.
Bear in mind
- There is climbing. A lift takes you up, but you still walk stone paths and steps between the sights.
- It is hot at midday. Limestone holds heat and much of the route is unshaded.
- Weekends are busy, especially at the entrance to Huyen Khong cave.
- Cave floors are slippery when damp.

By season, February to May is most comfortable. The rainy season still works, since much of the visit is inside caves and temples, but the steps get slippery.
The key tip: the shaft of light through the roof of Huyen Khong cave is clearest between about 9 and 11am on a clear day. That alone is a reason to come in the morning.

Should I take the lift?
Take the lift up and walk down. The climb up is more than 150 steep stone steps; the descent is far easier and gives you views along the way. Travelling with older relatives, buy the lift both ways.

What not to miss
Huyen Khong cave
The largest and finest cave. Five natural openings in the roof let daylight fall in columns onto the altar below. Inside it is cool and cathedral-high, with statues set into alcoves in the rock.
Tam Thai pagoda
An old temple on the summit of Thuy Son, dating from the Nguyen dynasty. Quiet and weathered, quite unlike the newer temples elsewhere in the city.
Linh Ung pagoda and the stupa
This is the other Linh Ung — older than the one on Son Tra. The seven-storey stupa beside it photographs beautifully.
Am Phu cave
A cave at the foot of the hill staged as a Buddhist underworld, complete with a bridge between realms. Dark and a little frightening — small children may not enjoy it. Separate ticket.
Tang Chon cave
A chain of smaller chambers behind Linh Ung, quieter than the rest of the site.
The two viewing terraces
Vong Giang looks inland over the river and plain; Vong Hai looks out to Non Nuoc beach. Visit both — the outlooks are completely different.
Non Nuoc stone-carving village
At the foot of the hill, a stone-carving village centuries old. Walking through and watching the carvers work is worth doing even if you buy nothing. If you do buy, ask the price and bargain.
Four ways to plan it
Option 1 — Quick, two hours
Lift up → Tam Thai → Huyen Khong cave → Vong Hai terrace → lift down. Enough to see the best of it.
Option 2 — Half a day, three to four hours
The full Thuy Son route above, plus Am Phu cave and the carving village.
Option 3 — Combined with Hoi An (the usual choice)

Option 4 — Combined with Son Tra
Son Tra and Linh Ung Bai But early in the morning, a rest at midday, and the Marble Mountains in the late afternoon once the heat has dropped.
What to bring
- Trainers or flat shoes. The stone steps are uneven and slippery inside the caves.
- Water. There are only a couple of small kiosks up top.
- Hat and sunscreen.
- Clothing that covers shoulders and knees — this is a temple complex.
- Your phone torch. Some passages are dark.
- Small change for the lift and parking.
Common mistakes
- Coming at noon. Hottest, and the light shaft in the cave has gone.
- Skipping Huyen Khong cave. That is the reason people come here.
- Flip-flops. The rock is slick, especially after rain.
- Allowing only thirty minutes. Ninety is the minimum to see the main sights.
- Buying the lift both ways and not walking down. The descent is the scenic part.
- Buying carvings without asking the price first.

Yes, since most of it is caves and temples. Just wear shoes with grip.
Do I have to climb all five hills?
No. Only Thuy Son has a full visitor route; the rest are optional extras.
Are the caves dark?
Huyen Khong is bright thanks to the roof openings. The smaller passages and Am Phu cave are much darker.
Is there food there?
Only drinks and snacks. Eat in Non Nuoc at the foot of the hill or on the road to Hoi An.
Is it worth buying stone carvings?
If you like them, yes — it is a genuine old craft. Ask the price, bargain, and remember the weight if you are flying home.
