The short answer: February to August, and if you want a narrower window, March to May. That is when the sky is clear, the sea is calm, the Ba Na cable car rarely closes, and hotel prices have not yet reached their summer peak.
But "best" depends on what you are coming for. Someone chasing beach days, someone chasing photographs and someone chasing a bargain will each get a different answer. This guide goes month by month, and flags the dates to avoid if you dislike crowds and high prices.
Two seasons, not four
Central Vietnam does not have the four seasons of the north. There is a dry season and a wet season, and the line between them is fairly clear.
- Dry season (February – August): little rain, plenty of sun, calm sea. Heat builds from May.
- Wet season (September – January): rain in bursts, concentrated in October and November, which is also typhoon season.
One difference that surprises visitors from Hanoi: Da Nang does not get drizzle. Rain here arrives as a downpour, lasts an hour or two, and stops. A "rainy day" usually still contains four to six dry hours.

Choose your month by what you want
To swim
April to August. Warm water, moderate surf, good underwater visibility, with May and June at the top. Avoid October to December, when the sea is rough and red flags are common.
For photography
March to May. Clear skies, clean light and low humidity, which means long views — important at Ba Na and on Ban Co Peak.
To travel cheaply
September to November. Room rates can halve compared with July, and flights are markedly cheaper. The trade-off is weather risk.
To avoid crowds
September to December, or midweek in any month outside summer. Ba Na and Hoi An on a Tuesday in October feel like different places.
With children or older relatives
February to April. Not too hot, not too wet — the two conditions that matter most.
For Ba Na Hills specifically
February to May. Least fog, and the cable car rarely stops for wind.

If you do come in the wet season
It is not an impossible season — it is a season that rewards flexibility.
- Buy changeable flights and refundable rooms. The small premium is cheaper than losing the trip.
- Never put Ba Na on the last day. Keep it mid-trip so you have a spare day.
- Have an indoor plan B: the Cham Museum, the Marble Mountains caves, Fantasy Park, shopping centres, cafés.
- Watch typhoon forecasts three to five days ahead.
- Pack a thin raincoat and shoes with grip.

Three concrete recommendations
If your dates are entirely flexible
Go midweek in March or April. The best weather, moderate prices, and Ba Na far quieter than at the weekend.
If you can only travel in summer
Choose early June or late August and avoid mid-July. Do everything outdoors before 9am and after 4pm.
If price is the priority
Late September or December. Rates have dropped but the weather risk is lower than in October and November.
